Urban Unity provide staff to help youth aging out of care, former foster youth and other vulnerable youth ages 16-22 identify their goals and guide them each step of the way as they:

  • Strive to finish high school or earn a GED

  • Apply for college and scholarships and begin a college career

  • Find suitable and stable housing

  • Learn money management skills

  • Find and maintain employment

  • Apply for medical insurance and seek physical and mental health services

  • Access community resources

  • Build and maintain healthy relationships

  • Learn about sexual health and well being, with a focus on pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease prevention

  • Develop strong parenting skills if necessary

  • Establish life-long connections with caring adults

A Program with a touch of love

The unique aspect of this program is that the family (or other support system) is considered a vital part of the young adult’s path to success. When possible, Urban Unity helps young people reconcile with their family members. Additionally, our staff assist young adults in developing new relationships and lifelong connections with caring adults.

EMPLOYMENT SKILL BUILDING

Urban Unity offers an Employment Training Programs to youth aging out of the foster care system or young adults that experience foster care. This program is designed to help improve job readiness and skills. Urban Unity have highly skilled volunteers that are considered counselors and will help to identify and overcome any barriers that can block their path to employment. In the program, you and your employment counselor will develop an individual plan based on your personal needs and goals. The program begins with an initial assessment to determine your program eligibility, followed by a review of your work history, education, and skills. Finally, you will be enrolled in the complete Employment Training Program. The Employment Training Program includes participation in:

Employment Support Group

This employment support group meets monthly and will teach you:

  • New skills to make you a better employment candidate

  • How to design and write your resume and cover letters

  • how to choose your list of personal references

  • Tips on finding job openings

  • Proper job application and follow-up techniques

  • The best ways to handle a job interview

  • Interview etiquette tips

In the group, those who need it will also be provided with:

  • Email account set up, Internet, fax, copier, and office supply access

  • Mailing service to send out your cover letters, resumes, and job applications

  • Access to many different career planning resources

  • Bus fare to get you to your job interviews

Work Experience Program

This program will provide you with up to 8 weeks of valuable on-the-job paid work experience. This will enhance your employability by teaching you job skills or updating your current skills. After you complete your on-the-job training experience, you can return for job placement assistance with your upgraded resume, a letter of recommendation from your employment counselor, and great work references.

Support Services Program

This program is designed to help you with “continuous employment maintenance” (in other words, keeping you employed) once you have found a job. The program will give you on-going support and counseling so you can achieve your plans and goals. With a counselor, your support services are chosen and scheduled to meet your specific needs and may include: work uniforms and clothing, tools and supplies for your special job or training needs, transportation assistance, guidance in getting your driver’s license restored, job certifications and licenses, text books, and access to other resources to meet your needs in achieving your service plan and employment goals.

The Community Educational Program

This program will give you opportunities for life-long learning and personal growth. When you enroll in the Employment Training Program, you can take part in many different training services and educational programs. You will also be guided to sources of financial aid for school, as well as course selection and class scheduling information.

Urban unity precious gems leadership academy

Precious Gems Leadership Academy is a revolutionary, innovative, and interactive series of student leadership workshops geared towards building student leaders.

PGLA program harnesses leadership skills within each student; skills necessary to achieve personal growth, resulting in a desire to create positive change in their lives and in their community.
